A winter storm that swept across Ontario overnight Jan. 25–26 left significant snow accumulation and caused widespread travel disruptions, as the province experienced one of its snowiest Januarys on record. While some areas reported accumulations of up to 50 centimetres, Rideau Lakes received close to 20 cm, slightly below earlier forecasts that had called for as much as 30 cm.
Eastern Ontario was already dealing with above-average snowfall for January, with Environment Canada data showing several communities had surpassed typical monthly totals before the latest storm. Ottawa recorded multiple January snowfall records earlier in the month, reinforcing a pattern of persistent and heavy winter weather across the region.
The Upper Canada District School Board announced the cancellation of all school transportation Monday due to poor road conditions. Schools remained open to students and staff; however, all Grade 9 to 12 exams scheduled for the day were postponed and shifted forward one day for the remainder of the week.
Overnight snowfall combined with icy conditions delayed plowing operations across Rideau Lakes and surrounding municipalities, forcing some businesses to remain closed or to close early.
Environment Canada reported January snowfall totals across much of Ontario were well above historical averages, with Eastern Ontario seeing repeated storm systems and limited melt between events. Record-breaking overnight cold temperatures following the storm added to its severity and ensured no significant thaw was expected in the coming week.
Ontario 511 is a bilingual, 24/7 provincial traveller information service that provides real-time updates on traffic, road closures, construction, and winter conditions, including snowplow tracking. While Rideau Lakes does not have local 511 cameras on its website, the service can still be useful for residents travelling longer distances for work or other purposes.
Drivers are reminded to take extra precautions on snowy and icy roads and to allow extra time for travel as municipalities continue snow removal efforts.
