On Saturday, Feb. 15th, 2025, the Kids Fishing Derby hosted by the Westport and Athens Lions Clubs was a great success. Thirty-eight children registered for the free event, which was held on Sand Lake just off Westport Lions Beach. Children of all ages enjoyed the great outdoors. The derby, initially conceived by Lions Jim McGlade and Todd Evans, was an event that had everything an angler would want. Holes were precut in the ice, fishing gear was provided, and free hot dogs and hot chocolate were given to everyone.

Prizes were generously donated by Norris Bait and Tackle, Village Green, Westport Hardware, and O.F.A.G.H.

This was the first time an ice derby was held, and given its success, this reporter believes it will not be the last.
