Four years ago, Barb Shea chose Delta as her home, and as part of her retirement plan.

Her connection to the Rideau Lakes community began years earlier when visiting her son’s family here. She came to know and love the area, meeting many of the neighbours. She eventually purchased their house as she had grown to love the community and knew it would feel like home.

Shea brings more than 40 years of health-care experience in hospitals, community and provincial public health, as a manager and leader, to her candidacy. She began her career as a medical laboratory technologist, later transitioning to a career in infection prevention and control. She volunteered with the World Health Organization for its Ebola response in 2014, working with local government and communities in West Africa, in a highly volatile environment.

Shea has volunteered on daycare boards, supported fundraising and served as a chapter president of Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Canada. In 2015, she was honoured with an Alumni Award for Science from Mohawk College in recognition of her contributions to the health-care community.

Throughout her career and volunteer work, Shea has had the opportunity to work with people from many different backgrounds, and in challenging circumstances, learning the importance of active listening, working together to find practical solutions and following through to get things done.

Shea wants to give her time, experience and energy back to the community she now calls home. She believes the community deserves a council that conducts its business professionally and respectfully, where different perspectives are welcomed, concerns can be discussed constructively, and everyone remains focused on working together in the best interest of the community.

“Rideau Lakes Township deserves results. As councillor for Ward 1, I want to work with fellow council members to help make that happen,” Shea says.
